ST. LOUIS, MO. -- Wichita State is the 2016-17 Missouri Valley Conference All-Sports Champion, claiming the crown for the fifth-consecutive year and league-best 23rd time.
Â
WSU earned seven team titles -- of the 15 MVC sports it sponsors -- and an aggregate score of 8.493, marking only the sixth time since 1992-93 (merger of MVC men's and women's sports) that an institution has won more than five team titles in one academic year.
Â
Shocker teams claimed league championships (or co-championships) in men's basketball, men's golf, men's indoor track & field, men's outdoor track & field, women's indoor track & field, women's outdoor track & field, and women's tennis.

The All-Sports Trophy is based on a school's average finish in each of the sponsored championships by the Missouri Valley Conference. Finishes in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball are based on regular-season competition. All other sports are determined by finish at the championship tournament or championship meet.
Â
In 2016-17, the MVC utilized a new point system to determine the league's all-sport champion. Teams are awarded 10 points for first, nine for second, eight for third, etc., and the total accumulated points are divided by the number of sports in which a particular school competes. For sports not sponsored by every MVC school, the points decrease by number of competing schools (i.e., in a sport where eight teams compete, 10/8 = 1.25, so point totals decrease by 1.25; 1st = 10, 2nd = 8.75, 3rd = 7.5, etc.).
