WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State will open competition Thursday at the West Preliminary Championships competition of the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 25-27.
The Shockers qualified 25 track and field student-athletes for the competition.
In addition, four Shocker multi-athletes (
Hunter Veith,
Breanne Borman,
Gavyn Yetter,
Nikki Larch-Miller) were announced today as qualifying for the NCAA Championship. Those four, in addition to the qualifiers out of the East and West Preliminary Championships, will compete at the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 7-10 in Eugene, Oregon.
Wichita set 42 personal bests in winning both the Men's and Women's Missouri Valley Conference Championships in Wichita. In addition, the Shockers also set or improved 15 Top 10 All-Time WSU marks, including school records by
Jamesia Milton in the hammer throw (205-8/62.69) and
Tyra Bickham in the discus (48-6.25/14.79m).
Austin Corley has the highest ranking of WSU's preliminary qualifiers with the No. 9 time of 50.59 in the West 400 meter hurdles, while Milton's throw in the hammer is the highest WSU's women's West ranking at No. 11.
Hunter Veith's 7,610 points ranks No. 9 on the list of the multi-athletes qualifying for the NCAA Championship, which includes athletes with the Top 24 point totals across the NCAA.
Overall this outdoor season, the Shockers set or improved 10 men's Top 10 marks and 23 women's marks. In addition to the school records set by Milton in the hammer throw (205-8/62.69) and
Bickham in the discus (48-6.25/14.79m), the Shocker women also set record in the
4x400 meter relay record (3:39.18).
For the men,
Veith's 7,610 points in the Decathlon came closest to setting the school record behind All-American
Austin Bahner's 7,847 points in 2013.
Zach Loesch's shot put of 59-5/18.11m moved him to third all-time this season.
