SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Wichita State's
Hunter Veith won the Decathlon and
Nikki Larch-Miller was fourth in the Heptathlon after two days of competition at the Sam Adams Combined Events Invitational.
Veith scored a personal best 7,610 points which also moved him into second in the all-time Top 10 list at WSU behind
Austin Bahner's 7,847 points in 2013. Veith's Saturday included a 14.52 in the 110 meter hurdles, 37.05m in the discus, 4.70m in the pole vault, 55.33m in the javelin and 4:50.02 in the 1,500 meters.
Veith also led after the first day's five events, just 23 points ahead of second place. On Friday, he ran 11.03 in the 100 meters, jumped 7.22m in the long jump, threw the shot put 12.17m, high jumped 1.98m and ran the 400 meters in 48.83.
In the Heptathlon,
Nikki Larch-Miller scored 5,464 points which was good enough for third place, moving up a spot after completing Friday in fourth place after four events.
Joining Larch-Miller in the Heptathlon standings from WSU was
Claudia Rojo in fifth (4,932).
Breanne Borman,
Gavyn Yetter and
Martiesha Caines did not finish the competition.
At cross-town Friends University on Saturday, WSU won five titles with a limited squad.
For the men,
Austin Chippeaux won the high jump (2.09m/6-10.25), and
Zach Loesch won the shot put (17.30m/56-09.25). For the women,
Tyra Bickham won the discus (52.24m/171-05) ,
Kelsey Slawson won the shot put (13.85m/45-5.25), and
Courtney Mills won the triple jump (11.79m/38-08.25).
WSU is next in action at home next week at the K.T. Woodman Track and Field Classic at Cessna Stadium.
