Veith Leads Sam Adams Multis

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.  --  Wichita State's Hunter Veith led the Decathlon and Nikki Larch-Miller was fourth in the Heptathlon after the first day of competition at the Sam Adams Combined Events Invitational.

Veith scored 3,991 points on the first day after five events, just 23 points ahead of second place and former Shocker All-American Austin Bahner's 3,968 points. WSU's Ben Johnson was in sixth with 3,714 points.

In the Heptathlon, Nikki Larch-Miller scored 3,296 points which was good enough for fourth place after four events.

Veith ran 11.03 in the 100 meters, jumped 7.22m in the long jump, threw the shot put 12.17m, high jumped 1.98m and ran the 400 meters in 48.83. Saturday's five events will include the 110 meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meter run.

Shockers joining Larch-Miller in the Heptathlon standings were Breanne Borman in sixth (3,127), Gavyn Yetter in seventh (3,098), Martiesha Caines in eighth (3,013) and Claudia Rojo in 10th (2,944). On Saturday, the Heptathlon continues with the long jump, javelin and the 800 meters to cap the seven-event competition.

On Saturday's Day two of the multi-events, the Decathlon continues at 12:30 p.m., Central, while the Heptathlon continues at 2:30 p.m., Central.

At cross-town Friends University on Saturday, 17 Shockers will compete in a myriad of events on Biff Green Track at Adair-Austin Stadium.

The Saturday portion of the meet will begin with the Hammer Throw at 10 a.m., along with multiple other field events beginning at 11 p.m. Track events will get started on Saturday at 12:30 p.m., and continue through about 6 p.m.

The Invitational will be the largest home track meet in Friends program history with more than 600 athletes scheduled to compete. Other teams scheduled to compete include four NCAA Division II teams, 12 NAIA teams and five junior college teams.
