NORMAN, Okla. -- Wichita State took runner-up honors in four of the six events contested Friday night at the John Jacobs Track and Field Invitational at the Jacobs Track and Field Complex.
Rebekah Topham was second in the 1,500 meters (4:27.65) and
Jamesia Milton was second in the hammer throw (185-8/56.59m), while
Emilea Finley (17:22.20) and
Kyle Larkin (15:16.56) were second in their respective 5,000 meter races. In addition,
Ugis Jocis was third in the 1,500 meters.
Wichita State has a team of 77 men and women competing Friday night and Saturday.
On Saturday, the competition starts with the women's javelin at 10:30 a.m., and 4 x 100-meter relay begin the running events on the track at 12:45 p.m.
Nine teams, including host Oklahoma, are competing in the 48th annual meet which is being scored as a Division I event. Nebraska (ranked No. 18 nationally on the men's side in the latest United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association's ranking), Central Oklahoma, Tulsa, North Texas, South Plains, Wichita State, Butler Community College, Missouri State University and Texas-Arlington are the other collegiate teams.
Wichita State is coming off one of its best overall weeks of the year as the men's and women's teams set 53 personal bests and 10 All-Time Top 10s. In addition, the Shockers have 26 Top 100 NCAA marks to date in 2017.
Leading the way was the women's 4x100 meter relay which ran a 45.12, the second-best mark in school history.
Raianna Maples,
Jacque Darby,
Taylor Larch-Miller and
Nikki Larch-Miller combined to run the time, which is the 20th-best in the NCAA West.
On the men's side. the 4x100 meter relay of Griffin, Scheck, Powell and Wells ran a 40.45, which was the third-best in Shocker history at the Woodman. The Mark was also the 22nd-best in the NCAA West.
WSU's top individuals nationally are
Hunter Veith in the Decathlon, whose 7,610 points ranks No. 7 in the West and No. 9 overall, and
Nikki Larch-Miller, whose 5,551 points in the Heptathlon ranks No. 8 in the West and No. 12 overall.
A year ago at the Jacobs' Invite, the men's and women's track and field teams were both second. OU out-distanced the Shocker men, 180-157, while the Sooner women scored 250 points to the Shockers' 113.
