WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State won the opening series of the season with a 16-2 win over Utah Valley in game two of the series.
Travis Young went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a double, while
Jordan Boyer went 2-for-3 with three RBI and
Gunnar Troutwine went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a double.
Starter
Cody Tyler went five innings and gave up one earned run on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Shockers used a two-out rally in the bottom of the second to go in front of the Wolverines. With two outs,
Trey Vickers and
Travis Young both singled. Boyer was hit by a pitch to load the bases and
Josh DeBacker singled to left field to drive in both Vickers and Young for a 2-0 lead. After the Wolverines dropped a foul ball,
Greyson Jenista walked to load the bases and
Dayton Dugas followed with a bases clearing double to put the Shockers up 5-0.
Alec Bohm doubled to right field to score Dugas and make the score 6-0.
WSU added to the lead in the third inning. Vickers hit the Shockers' first home run of the season and Young followed with a double. Boyer's single to right field drove in Young for an 8-0 lead.
Zac Willis' solo home run in the top of the fourth broke up Tyler's no-hitter and made the score 8-1.
The Shockers added on three more runs in the fourth on a Troutwine RBI single, a Young bases loaded walk and a Boyer sacrifice fly.
UVU scored an unearned run in the fifth to make the score 11-2, but the Shockers added five in the bottom of the fifth to push the lead to 16-2.
The Shockers and Wolverines wrap up the series on Sun., Feb. 19 at 1 p.m. at Eck Stadium.
