Lobos Down Shockers, 76-62

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Four New Mexico players scored in double-figures in leading the Lobos to a 76-62 win over Wichita State on the first day of the UNM Thanksgiving Tournament Friday night in Dreamstyle Arena.

Wichita State (0-5) will next face Illinois Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. CT, as the UNM Thanksgiving Tournament continues on day two.

Rangie Bessard led the Shockers with 16 points on 7-of-16 shooting and Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage chipped in 10 points and six rebounds off the bench. Angiee Tompkins grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds and just missed a double-double with nine points.

Cherise Beynon led all players with a game-high 23 points on 10-of-20 shooting to go with seven rebounds and five assists. The point guard controlled the game from start to finish for New Mexico (5-0).

Alex Lapeyrolerie cashed in all 15 of her points from beyond the arc (5-of-10) and Tesha Buck added 14 points on four three-pointers (5-of-15 overall) and eight assists. Jaisa Nunn rounded out the double-digit scorers with 13 points and 10 boards.

Wichita State struggled again from three-point range, making just 4-of-19 attempts and shooting 39 percent overall. New Mexico poured in 12 three-pointers in 34 attempts, both season-highs by a WSU opponent. The Lobos made 44 percent of its field goals for the game.

WSU dished out a season-high 17 assists and outrebounded UNM, 42-40, but it the Lobos came up with some huge offensive rebounds when it mattered.

1st Quarter
New Mexico came out on fire, hitting six of its first nine shots to take an early 17-11 lead. Jeliah Preston and Tompkins combined to score nine of the 11 points for Wichita State.

The Lobos finished the quarter with a 24-15 lead behind 10 points from Beynon and 53 percent shooting as a team. Preston led the Shockers with seven points in the opening 10 minutes.

2nd Quarter
Bessard scored the first four points of the quarter to close the gap to six, 27-21, in the opening minutes. A layup from Lozada-Cabbage and 15-foot jumper from Preston at the top of the key then sparked an 8-0 run to tie the game at 27.

Wichita State forced the Lobos to miss seven of the first nine attempts to help trim the lead.

As soon as Wichita State tied the game, UNM immediately responded with a 7-0 run of its own to regain the lead, 34-27. The Lobos closed the half with a 40-31 lead behind 15 points from Beynon.

Preston led the Shockers with nine points and Bessard added eight. WSU shot 40 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, but converted on only one triple in eight tries. New Mexico knocked down 44 percent of its shots, including six from long range.

3rd Quarter
The Shockers continued to have problems slowing down Beynon in the second half, as she scored six points in helping UNM extend its lead to 14 with 3:38 to play.

But, WSU would cut the deficit to just eight at the end of the period behind Bessard and five big points from Ambrosio off the bench.

The Shockers fought back to outscore the Lobos in the quarter, 18-17.

4th Quarter
A quick bucket inside from Bessard to open the fourth cut the lead to just six, but New Mexico made the first of four three-pointers to once again push the lead to double-digits.

With 3:30 to play, Wichita State found itself trailing 76-60. Lozada-Cabbage added a score to make the final 76-62 and to push her into double-figures.
