WICHITA, Kan. – Final accounting numbers are in for last week's men's basketball exhibition between Wichita State and Newman University.
After expenses, the event raised $45,000 for the American Red Cross to assist with hurricane and other disaster relief efforts.
"The generosity of Wichitans never ceases to amaze me," WSU Director of Athletics
Darron Boatright said. "We're grateful to the 5,300-plus fans who showed up, on short notice, to cheer on the Shockers and Jets and support a very worthy cause."
Newman Athletic Director Vic Trilli added:
"This was an amazing event that our two schools were able to put on to benefit disaster relief. And now that the total is counted and we're able to write a big check to the American Red Cross, it's even more awesome. This just goes to show what the people and community of Wichita are able to do when they put their minds together for a common cause, and Newman University is incredibly proud to have been a part of it."
Following last night's 80-61 win over Manhattan Christian, Newman is out to a 2-1 start to the regular season. The Jets return to the court Tuesday in Kansas City when they take on Pittsburg State University. Their next home action comes Tuesday, Nov. 28 against Washburn.
