WICHITA, Kan. - Behind 24 hits and five home runs, the Wichita State softball team defeated Barton Community College 20-0 at Wilkins Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
The Cougars came out swinging having three of the four total hits inside the first three innings. A diving catch by
Kaylee Huecker and a double play kept the Cougars off the scoreboard in the second before the bats came alive for the Shockers.
First pitch of the bottom of the second saw
Ryleigh Buck smash one over the center field fence before
Asea Webber doubled down the left line in the third to get Bailee Nickerson and
Kiersten Otte home. Ashton Esparza then doubled to get Webber round before Neleigh Herring and Huecker singled to get Esparza round.
Cassidy Kelsheimer then doubled to get both Herring and Huecker home to make it 7-0 after three innings.
In the fourth the Shockers loaded the bases before Esparza was hit by a pitch to get Otte home.
In the fifth the Shockers again loaded the bases for Caitlin Bingham [1-for-4 at bat] to step up and crush one over center field for a grand slam and make it 12-0. Otte doubled in the next at-bat before
Paige Luellen reached on an error allowing Otte to get round and make it 13.
In the bottom of the seventh
Laurie Derrico smashed a home run over right field while Bailey Lange took over in the circle, striking out six batters in the first three innings she pitched.
The ninth inning saw Huecker homer to center field and get Buck round for a two-run home run with Lange stepping up at the next at-bat and home running to left field for the fifth Shocker home run of the game.
Morgan Palmer then drew a walk, Otte singled before Lange tripled to right field to get both round. Kelsheimer then doubled to left field to get Lange home and make the final score 20-0.
Bingham started in the circle for the Shockers, striking out four batters and giving up three hits in the five innings pitched. Lange pitched the final five innings, striking out eight and allowing one hit.
Otte went 4-for-5 at bat, scoring four runs, while Huecker went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI's. Bingham had four RBI's with the grand slam.
The Shockers complete the fall schedule when they play host to Northern Oklahoma College Enid tomorrow at Wilkins Stadium. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. with admission $5 on the gate, no prior purchases are available. WSU students get in for free with a valid form of student ID.
