WICHITA, Kan. – Former Shocker standout Paul Miller will work alongside play-by-play voice
Shane Dennis on Wednesday night's Wichita State men's basketball telecast at Drake on Cox Channel Kansas.
Miller is the second of three special guest color commentators scheduled for Cox Shocker road games this season. Aubrey Sherrod previously stepped in for the Dec. 28 game at Indiana State. Mystery guest No. 3 will be unveiled during the week of the Feb. 15 Southern Illinois contest.
Tip-off from Des Moines, Iowa is scheduled for just after 6 p.m. CT and will air statewide on Cox HD 2022 with simulcasts in the Kansas City metro area on Spectrum Sports 2 and in the Chicagoland area on Comcast SportsNet Chicago. Fans outside of the Missouri Valley Conference footprint can also tune in via ESPN3.
Over a span of 132 games from 2001-06, Miller developed into one of the program's most accomplished centers. He still ranks 18
th on WSU's career scoring list with 1,137 career points, and his 724 rebounds are 13
th all-time.
Shocker fans may remember Miller's last appearance at Drake's Knapp Center on Feb. 22, 2006 when his buzzer-beating tip-in gave WSU a 60-58 victory and locked up a share of the program's first Missouri Valley Conference regular season title in 23 years.
Led by Miller, the 2006 Shockers also ended an 18-year NCAA Tournament drought that year, later defeating Seton Hall and Tennessee to reach the Sweet 16.
A 2013 Pizza Hut Shocker Sports Hall of Fame inductee, Miller is one of just four Shocker individuals to earn MVC Player of the Year honors, joining Antoine Carr (1983), Xavier McDaniel (1984, 85) and
Fred VanVleet (2014, 16).
Miller was an honorable mention all-conference choice as a junior and a first team All-Valley selection as a senior in 2006, when he averaged 13.1 points and 6.6 rebounds on his way to honorable mention AP All-America honors.
The 6-foot-10, Jefferson City, Mo. native was part of a Shocker resurgence in the early 2000s. As a redshirt freshman in 2002-03, he helped end a 14-year postseason drought for the program with the first of three consecutive NIT bids.
Two NIT wins in 2005 might have been the high-point of his career, were it not for – quite literally -- a lucky break.
A broken foot sidelined Miller just three games into his true freshman season, and the resulting medical hardship earned Miller a fifth year of eligibility.
The 2001-02 team's loss was the 2005-06 team's gain. In year that saw the Valley produce a record four NCAA Tournament teams, WSU went 14-4 and won the league by two full games.
Miller played professionally for eight seasons in Europe, with stops in Germany, Poland, Russia, Turkey and France. He retired following the 2013-14 season and currently resides in the Kansas City area.
