Shockers Take Down Newman, 6-0

WICHITA, Kan. - A strong pitching performance helped give the Shocker softball team their second win of the fall, 6-0 over Newman University.

Katie Malone got her first start of the year, throwing five innings and allowing just two hits. Freshman Bailey Klitzke threw the last two innings, only allowing one base runner on a walk.

McKenzie Adams led the offense with two hits, along with two RBI, in three at-bats. Ashley Johnson, Macklin Hitz, Laurie Derrico, Bethany Canada, Kennedy Long, and Brigitta Doherty all collected one hit a piece.

After the Shockers went down in order in the first inning, Laurie Derrico hit a one-out home run over the centerfield wall to give the Shockers a 1-0 lead.

With a Newman runner at second base and one out, the Jets lined into a double play to end the top of the fourth inning, with the score still 1-0.

Macklin Hitz led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to make the score 2-0.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Shockers were able to add on four more runs, to push the lead to 6-0, heading into the final inning. Wichita State worked fast in the seventh, getting their second win of the fall, 6-0.

The Shockers will be in action again tomorrow, as they host a triangular against Johnson County Community College and Crowder College. The Shockers will take on the Cavaliers at 12 p.m., and the Roughriders at 4 p.m. Both Johnson County and Crowder will play each other at 2 p.m.
