WICHITA, Kan. – Early scoring was the key for the Shockers in their 10-6 victory over Cowley College on Friday.
Freshman Bailey Klitzke threw all seven innings for the Shockers allowing six runs on eight hits and striking out seven.
Ashley Johnson led the team with three hits in four at-bats, while also scoring two runs.
Macklin Hitz had one hit and collected three RBI.
Wichita State got things going early, scoring one run in the bottom of the first on a double down the left-field line to make the score 1-0.
In the second inning, junior Morgan Palmer drove in a run on a single to right. Johnson then doubled to bring home
Mauriana Jamele, and make the score, 3-0.
Freshman
Madison Perrigan kept the scoring going in the third inning, with a single to make the score 4-0. Jamele added another run in the third on a fielder's choice, pushing the lead to 5-0.
In the fifth, Hitz grounded out to short to push the lead to 6-0. The Tigers put up their first run in the top of the fifth inning, making the score, 6-1.
The Shockers added three runs in the bottom of the sixth, before allowing five runs in the top of the seventh to make the score, 9-6. In the bottom of the seventh the Shockers added one run and gave Wichita State the 10-6 victory.
The Shockers are now 1-0 in the fall and are in action again on Friday, Sept. 30 against Newman for a 10-inning game.
