Ex-Shocker Toure' Murry Joins Timberwolves

Former Wichita State guard Toure' Murry has agreed to a training camp contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves, multiple media outlets reported Wednesday.

Murry, 27, played for Minnesota's NBA Summer League team last month in Las Vegas and performed well enough to earn a more formal October audition with the club. Murry joins Ron Baker (New York) and Fred VanVleet (Toronto) on the list of former Shockers who will appear on preseason rosters.

The Timberwolves kick off their seven-game preseason exhibition schedule Oct. 8 at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo. against the Miami Heat.

Murry logged 56 NBA regular season games with the Washington Wizards, Utah Jazz and New York Knicks from 2013-15 while shuttling between NBA D-League assignments. This will be his fourth training camp with his fourth different franchise, after preseason tours with the Wizards (2015), Jazz (2014) and Knicks (2013).

The 6-foot-5 guard spent the entirety of the 2015-16 season in the D-League, averaging 11.5 points and 4.7 assists for the Texas Legends and the Sioux Falls Sky Force and helped lead the latter to a league championship. Murry has been a valuable contributor in parts of four seasons on the minor league circuit, averaging in double-figures in each of the last three. In his rookie season (2012-13) he won a D-League crown with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

In an unrelated move, Murry's rights were acquired Wednesday by the newly-minted Greensboro Swarm as one of its 12 picks in the 2016 D-League expansion draft. The Swarm are an affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets.

At WSU, Murry carved out a record-breaking career from 2008-12. His 1,539 career points rank 12th on the Shockers' all-time list, and he was briefly the school's career assists record holder (430) before ceding the mantle to Fred VanVleet in 2015.

Murry was a four-year starter and helped elevate a Shocker program that had lost 20 games in the season prior to his arrival to four consecutive postseason bids. The 2011 Shockers won the NIT Championship for the first time in a school history. In 2012, WSU won the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title and earned a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
