WICHITA, Kan. – Two Wichita State women's golf signees, Rachel Stous and
Annika Chickering, both won tournaments this summer.
Stous, an incoming freshman from Topeka, Kan., recently won the Regional Qualifier for the Junior Optimist International Golf Championship. The qualifier, which was sponsored by The Kansas Women's Golf Association, was held at Emporia Municipal Golf Course. Rachel posted scores of 71-81 in the 36-hole event. Her first round of 71 included four birdies and one eagle, which enabled her to distance herself heading into round two.
"I think it was a good win mainly because the first round was great and that was my first tournament of the summer," Stous said. "It was good to start off with a win and I'm looking forward to the optimist in Florida!"
"Rachel is a very talented golfer and she's going to get to tee it up against many of the best junior golfers in the world," WSU Head Coach
Tom McCurdy said. "This experience is going to be great for her as she enters her freshman year as a Shocker."
The Junior International Optimist Golf Championship is July 30-August 4, being held at the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Chickering, an incoming freshman from San Diego, Calif., posted a solid win at the Toyota Tour Cup Series at Twin Oaks Golf Course, June 11-12. The win was her first of the summer and came against a top-caliber California field. The tournament was played with a 36-18 format, similar to most collegiate events.
"This is a big time win for Annika," McCurdy said. "She's extremely talented and her game continues to improve. Having won a tournament in a 36-18 format shows that she's ready for the college game. That's tough to do and this win is very well deserved!"
