WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State interim athletic director,
Darron Boatright announced Tuesday that head women's tennis coach,
Colin Foster has agreed to a five-year contract extension through the end of the 2020-21 season.
Foster, 31, led the Shockers to a 27-4 mark in 2015-16, tying a school record for dual wins in a season. Under his guidance, WSU climbed as high as No. 13 in the national rankings (a program-best) and earned its best-ever seed in NCAA Regional play.
"Colin's record speaks for itself," Boatright said. "We're proud of the championship-level program that he has built here and even more pleased with the way he's gone about it, with high-character kids who represent our university well on and off the court."
WSU is 138-53 overall in seven seasons under Foster, and his .723 career winning percentage is the highest in program history. He's 68-0 against Missouri Valley Conference foes, sweeping every conference regular season and tournament title since his arrival in the summer of 2009, and has led the Shockers to NCAA Tournament bids in each of his first seven go-arounds.
Foster said: "I want to thank
Darron Boatright and
Brad Pittman for continuing to entrust me with our women's tennis program for years to come. The run we've been on, and hope to continue, is a testament to their support and that of so many others in the department.
"[Assistant coach] Kewa [Foster] and I love coming to work every day. We have an incredible group of young ladies, and -- while we are losing a significant portion of our team this coming year -- we have a strong core of returners and are excited about the players we have signed and the ones we are continuing to recruit."
Foster has won three-consecutive MVC Coach of the Year honors (four overall) and needs just 41 more wins to surpass Les Stafford (1989-04) as WSU's all-time coaching victories leader.
In 2015-16, WSU knocked off nine nationally-ranked teams (ITA Top-75) and set a school-record with 17-consecutive wins over the final two months of the regular season. In the process, the Shockers improved on their school-record home winning streak, which now stands at 36-straight dating back to March of 2013.
WSU has made strides on the national level in each of the last three seasons, finishing No. 57 in the final ITA rankings in 2013-14, No. 41 in 2014-15 and now No. 29 (pre-tournament) in 2015-16.
Sophomore
Gabriela Porubin earned a coveted bid to the 2016 NCAA Individual Championships, and WSU swept all six singles positions and two of the three doubles slots on this year's All-MVC Team.
