WICHITA, Kan. -- Ten of the Shockers' school-record 25 qualifiers will compete Thursday at the NCAA Track and Field West Preliminaries at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kan.
Competition gets underway with the men's hammer throw at noon, where NCAA Honorable Mention All-American
Weston Cottrell will lead a trio of Shockers, including
Skylar Arneson and
Taylor Goldsmith, in the event.
Carlea Holt and
Breanne Borman will also open at noon with the women's javelin.
Freshman indoor All-American
Jared Belardo and
Hunter Veith are schedule to long jump at 3:30 p.m., while the
Jamesia Milton is set to throw the women's hammer at 4 p.m.
Later in the day,
Ugis Jocis will run the 1,500 meters, set for 6 p.m., while
Brady Johnson will run the 10,000 meters at approximately 9:40 p.m. The remaining schedule for individual Shockers is listed below with their ranking and qualifying mark.
The Shocker men are led by Belardo, who will compete in both the triple jump and long jump. His triple jump is the sixth-best in the competition at 52-6.5/16.01m, while his long jump is the is the 16th-best in the field at 25-4.5/7.73m.
Holt has the highest-ranked mark for the Shocker women at No. 15 in the javelin. Her school-record throw of 164-11/50.28m at the Valley Championship moved her from 34th in the West to No. 15.
Also with marks in the top 10 in the field at their respective events are Cottrell, who has the eighth-best hammer throw at 213-10/65.19m, and
Damien Odle, who has the 10th-best throw in the javelin at 240-8/73.36m.
The Shockers also have three competitiors in three different events, the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase and the men's javelin and hammer throw.
Sidney Hirsch,
Rebekah Topham and
Kayla Deighan will run in the steeplechase. For the men, Cottrell,
Skylar Arneson and
Taylor Goldsmith will compete in the hammer throw and Odle,
Dylan Reimer and
Chase Pote will compete in the javelin.
WSU also has two competitors in three additional events,

Breanne Borman in the women's javelin,

Hunter Veith in the long jump and Belardo and
Shazz Michael Lindo in the triple jump. Eleven other Shockers will compete in single events.

Shockers Win Valley Titles...Wichita State's men's and women's track and field teams won the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Championship at the Gibson Track and Field Complex, May 13-15, in Terre Haute, Ind. The Shockers sealed both titles mid-afternoon Sunday after two and a half days of competition with the women out-distancing second place UNI 155.5 to 133. The Shocker men ran away with the title, scoring 206 points to SIU's 132. WSU scored points in all but five of the 42 total men's and women's events.
Individual MVC Champions... Sunday's lone Shocker champion was
Jared Belardo in the triple jump with a distance of 50-11.00/15.52m, to bring WSU's total individual titleists to eight. Here's a look at the champions and their event and mark:

Javelin Throwers Dominate Valley... The men's javelin team scopred 32 points with six athletes in the top eight places led by champion
Damien Odle, while Holt led a bevy of women's javelin throwers to score 26 points also with six in the top eight.
Breanne Borman (150-11/46.01m) was third,
Andrea Navarro (145-07/44.37) was fourth,
Madelyn Halstead (138-10/42.33m) was sixth and
Kelsey Tenbrink (136-01/41.47m) was seventh.
Multi-Athletes Make Valley Score Big... Both the Shocker Decathlon and Heptathlon athletes also scored six of the top eight places with the men scoring 34 points with first (
Hunter Veith), second, third, fourth, fifth and eighth and the women scoring 31 points with first (
Breanne Borman), second, third, fifth, sixth and eight places.
Rainbolt Named Valley Outdoor Men's and Women's Coach of the Year... Head Coach
Steve Rainbolt was named to MVC's Men's and Women's Outdoor Coach of the Year after coaching the Shockers to both titles. He's been Outdoor COY 14 times, with five men's titles and nine women's titles.
School Records That Fell in 2016... Wichita State's women's and men's javelin throwers broke the school record in 2016 with
Carlea Holt's throw of 50.28m/164-11 at the Valley Championship and
Damien Odle's throw of 73.36m/240-8 at the Shocker Open.
Those Competing Who Set School Records in 2015... With the two records from 2016, 10 Shockers currently on the roster hold school records, including three from the All-American 4x100 women's relay team.

Taylor Larch-Miller was a part of the second-team All-American 4x100 meter relay team that set the school record in 2015 at 44.30.

Weston Cottrell set the Shocker Hammer Throw record in 2015 with a toss of 65.60m/215-3.
-
Brady Johnson is competing in the 10,000 meters but he holds the WSU 5,000 meter record at 14:03.58 which he set in 2015.
-Twin sister of
Taylor Larch-Miller, Nikki, has been battling injury in 2016, but set 100 meter (11.38), 200 meter (23.23), 100 meter hurdles (13.08), and 4x100m (44.30 as anchor).
MVC Athletes of the Week... Six Shockers earned Valley Athlete of the Week honors including
Gavyn Yetter (3-22),
Emilea Finley (3-22),
Taylor Larch-Miller (3-29),
Dylan Reimer (4-5),
Jared Belardo (4-19) and
Rebekah Topham (5-3). Topham's honor might be the most memorable as she was honored for the win in the 1,500 meters at the Drake Relays with a time of 4:23.09 with a lunging fall at the finish line.

hocker Top 10s... The women's roster currently holds 44 Top 10 marks and the men's roster holds 30 Top 10 marks in Shocker history. -In the men's Hammer, three of the top marks are held by the three Shockers competing this week in the West Prelims. Cottrell holds the record (215-3/65.60m), while
Skylar Arneson is second (63.41m/208-0) and
Taylor Goldsmith is fourth at 203-7/62.05m).
-Nikki and
Taylor Larch-Miller hold the top two times in the 100 meters at 11.38 and 11.47, and the 100 meter hurdles at 13.08 and 13.19, respectively. They also are a part of four different 4x100 relay teams in the top 10, including the record at 44.30.
-WSU's trio of women's Steeplechase participants this week hold three of the best times at WSU.

2016 Indoor All-Americans... Breanne Borman and
Jared Belardo both placed 12th in the Pentathlon and Long Jump, respectively, to earn Second-Team All-American honors at the 2016 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the CrossPlex. Borman, who opened the competition tying her personal best with a 12th-place finish in the 60 meter hurdles at 8.64, had a high finish of eighth in the shot put with a distance of 40-8.75 (12.41m). She was 11th in the high jump (5-6, 1.68m) and the long jump (18-10.75, 5.76m), and 13th in the 800 meters (2:27.75) to round-out the competition. She scored 4,003 points in the five events. Belardo, the only freshman in the NCAA long jump field and the 2016 Midwest Region Field Athlete of the Year, jumped 24-1 (7.34m) on his first jump of the competition. He was sixth after the first round, and jumped 23-9.5 (7.25m) on his second attempt before fouling his third attempt.
Belardo Indoor Regional Pick... Jared Belardo was named the 2016 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Midwest Region Division I Indoor Field Athlete of the Year. Belardo, a freshman from Leavenworth, Kansas, won both the long jump and the triple jump at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships and went on to earn second-team Indoor All-American honors. His school-record 7.86m (25-9½) leap to win the long jump moved him to No. 9 in the nation, and his 15.84m (51-11¾) triple jump earlier this season was a school record.
Men Indoor MVC Champs... Wichita State's men's indoor track and field team won the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Championship by a margin of nine points, 141.5 to 132.5 over SIU, while the women's team took runner-up honors to Illinois State. The men's championship for WSU, which broke a string of seven MVC indoor and outdoor runner-up finishes, was the men's second overall title. The first came in 2010.
Shockers Earned All-American Honors at 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championships...
-Nikki Larch Miller ran a 2:19.63 in the 800 meters to finish second, but the effort pushed her score to 5,806, and an eighth-place overall Heptathlon finish and All-American honors at the 2015 NCAA Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field.
-Wichita State's 4x100 meter relay moved into 16th place after Kentucky was disqualified which gave the Shocker quartet second-team All-American honors. They placed 17th overall after taking seventh in their heat with a time of 44.89 Thursday evening but learned later of the disqualification, the move to 16th-place and the second-team honors for

Deja Young and
Shanice Andrews.
-In the hammer throw,
Weston Cottrell finished 21st with throw of 204-6.
Shockers Sent 17 to 2015 Prelims... Wichita State track and field qualified 17 student-athletes to compete in 20 events at the 2015 NCAA West Preliminaries, in Austin, Texas. Three athletes completed in multiple events, including
Nikki Larch-Miller (100 meter hurdles/Long Jump/4x100),
Taylor Larch-Miller (100 meters/100 meter hurdles/4x100 relay) and
Brady Johnson (5,000meters/10,000 meters). The women's team included Nikki and
Taylor Larch-Miller,

Deja Young.

Angie Vailas went as alternates on the 4x100 meter relay team. The men's team included
