PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. – Wichita State's top women's tennis doubles duo of
Gabriela Porubin and
Julia Schiller moved one step closer to a berth in the 2016 US Open by winning the USTA Missouri Valley Sectional Qualifier last weekend at the Homestead Country Club.
The Missouri Valley Sectional Qualifier (not be confused with the Missouri Valley Conference) is one of 14 USTA sectional qualifying tournaments held throughout the spring and summer.
Porubin and Schiller went 3-0 to win their sectional draw, dropping just eight games over six sets. They won an all-Shocker semifinal against graduating senior
Summer Schlotterback and volunteer assistant Yokkie Mahajaroenkul, 6-1, 6-2, and dispatched the team of Gabby Lee and Sarah Wilcox in the final, 6-0, 6-4
Porubin and Schiller (23-10 during the NCAA season) will compete in August against the winners of 13 other sectionals for a wild card spot in the US Open's main draw. That event will be held in conjunction with the Connecticut Open, August 21-27, at Yale University's Connecticut Tennis Center.
Schiller will be making her second trip to New Haven in as many years. She and Dusty Boyd (Nebraska) won the Missouri Valley mixed doubles crown last year and eventually reached the quarterfinal round.
A handful of other Shocker entries fell just short of the 2016 National Playoffs.
Porubin and Schiller advanced to the semifinals in the 23-player women's singles draw. Seeded third overall, Porubin dropped just one game in her first two matches before falling 6-3, 6-2 to No. 2 seed Elizabeth Scotty. Schiller also went 2-1, knocking off fourth-seeded Angelina Zhuravleva in three sets, before losing to top-seed and eventual champion Sanaz Marand.
Schiller competed with WSU head women's coach
Colin Foster in mixed doubles, but the duo were ousted in the quarterfinals.
Foster – a former Purdue standout – went 3-1 in the men's singles draw. He defeated the No. 4 and 6 seeds in the draw before falling to the aforementioned Boyer in the semifinals.
