5/15/2016 10:18:00 PM

WICHITA, Kan. – After winning both the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title and the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship, the Wichita State softball team has received an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Shockers have been selected to the Norman Regional and will be heading to Norman, Okla. with, No. 1 Oklahoma, Tulsa and Ole Miss.

Wichita State's regional will begin on Friday, May 20, as the Shockers will play, No. 1 Oklahoma, at 8:00 p.m., on ESPN.

This marks just the third time in school history that the Shockers have advanced to the NCAA Tournament with the last time being in 2005, when the team received an at-large bid.

"Our girls are excited, head coach Kristi Bredbenner said. "They are excited for the opportunity to play in a regional and it is nice to have that nothing to lose mentality. We're the underdog, and not expected to win, so we can go in there and potentially be a team that makes you earn it."
