Shockers Seek Ninth-Straight MVC Title

Live Stats

WICHITA, Kan. -
The Wichita State men's golf team will head to Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. for the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Championship on April 25-26.

The Shockers are looking to win their ninth-straight Valley title - which would tie them with Oklahoma State (1947-55) for most consecutive men's golf titles in conference history - and 21st overall. The Shockers' 20 titles are the most by any Valley team, with former member school North Texas in second place with 13. WSU also has won the most individual titles, as 19 Shockers have taken home medalist honors, most recently accomplished last year as Louis Cohen Boyer won last year with a score of 211. The Shockers won the Championship by 37 strokes last year

Prairie Dunes Country Club's course will feature a par-70, 6,598 layout for the Championship. Teams will play 36 holes (two rounds) on Monday, and finish up with 18 holes on Tuesday, with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on both days. The conference champion will earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. Regionals will be held on May 16-18, and the National Championship tournament will be on May 27-June 7 in Eugene, Ore.

The Shockers were unanimously selected to win in the pre-Championship coaches poll, receiving all nine first-place votes. Wichita State enters the MVC Championship as the league's top rated program in the GolfStat team rankings. Three Shockers rank among the MVC's top seven players in stroke average this year: Grant Bennett, Jacob Bishop and Conrad Walcher. Bennett  leads the Valley in stroke average (71.12) and was named Golfer of the Week this week. Bennett has been named GOTW the most out of all Valley golfers this season, with five awards. He is only Valley golfer with a score vs. par below zero (-0.9), and also has shot the best single-round score in the conference this year (65).

The Shockers have been the Valley's most dominant program for nearly two decades, finishing first or second (with 14 titles) in each of the last 19 seasons. WSU has won the league championship 14 of the last 17 seasons. Illinois State is the only other Valley men's golf team to earn a title since the Shockers' championship run began in 1999, as the Redbirds claimed team victories in 2002, 2005 and 2007.

Live stats will be available on GolfStat. Recaps will be posted on GoShockers.com, as well as mvc-sports.com, at the end of each day.
