WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State men's tennis head coach
Brad Louderback announced the signing of Stefan Gonzalez to a National Letter of Intent, as well as the addition of local standout Connor Devlin, Monday afternoon.
Gonzalez and Devlin join Honza Poboril who signed in the fall to make up the Shockers' three-man signing class.
Gonzalez will come to Wichita after spending two seasons at Seminole State in Oklahoma. A member of Guatemala's Davis Cup Team, Gonzalez also was a national champion in U10, U12, U14, U16 and U18 divisions. Finished as the runner-up at the JITIC Tournament, which included the four best players from each country in the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico. He was the doubles champion at Copa Cariari ITF in San Jose, Costa Rica. Gonzalez was ranked as high as No. 386 in the ITF. A native of Guatemala City, Guatemala, Gonzalez is the son of Wilfredo and Sara Gonzalez. Prior to Seminole State, he attended Bilingüe El Prado.
"Stefan is coming in with some experience transferring from Seminole State where they have good shot at winning the national championship this year," Louderback said. "He has a great attitude and works extremely hard. He comes from a good tennis family and we are all looking forward to him joining us next season."
A Wichita native, Devlin will join the team from nearby Wichita Collegiate. He was the USTA Kansas District Doubles Champion in 2015, while being coached by former Shocker
Guillermo de Vilchez and former WSU head coach Rex Coad. His best achievement to this point was coming back from a set and double break down to win a USTA Juniors Tournament. He has also played in two ITF Futures tournaments and a U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier. Devlin is a standout in the classroom as well, as he is one of nine Koch Scholars in the incoming freshman class at WSU.
"We're excited to have a local student-athlete in Connor, a familiar face from the community join our program," Louderback said. "He's an outstanding young man who works very, very hard both on and off the court. I look forward to watching him progress over the next few years and think he will be a great addition to the team."
