WICHITA, Kan. -- After just two weeks of the 2016 outdoor season the Wichita State track and field program holds 48 Top 100 NCAA marks, including 11 Top 25 performances.
WSU's highest-ranked result is
Gavyn Yetter's 5,447 points in the Heptathlon, which ranks No. 2 in the NCAA and No. 2 in the West Region, while the highest men's performance is
Hunter Veith's 6,817 points in the Decathlon, which ranks No. 8 in both the NCAA and in the West.
The top 24 multi-event point totals in the country at the end of the season advance to the NCAA finals, by-passing the regional, while the top 48 student-athletes in the other individual events advance in regional. The top 24 relay teams also advance to regional competition. The Shockers compete in the West Regional, which will be held in Lawrence, Kan., May 25-28.
The Shocker women have 18 top 48 regional marks early in the season, while the men have 24 top 48 marks.
WSU's next-best men's mark is All-American
Jared Belardo's first outdoor mark of the season and his WSU career, a 50-6 (15.39m) in the triple jump which is the No. 8 all-time Shocker mark. WSU's record triple jump is 55-1.5 (16.80m) set by All-American Randy Lewis in 2003.
Belardo's long jump of 24-5 (7.44m) is the 29th-best in the NCAA and the 12th-best in the West Region. All-American Don Duvall holds the Shocker record in the long jump with a distance of 26-2.5 (7.99m), which he set in 1980. Belardo is just two inches shy of No. 10, which is held by Brandon Childs' distance of 24-7.25 (7.50m) set in 2011.
Hurdler Jake James, who was injured during the indoor season, set a new personal record of 14.27 in the 110 hurdles, which equalled the No. 9 time in Shocker history set by Roger Oetting in 1979. His time also ranks 47th in the NCAA and 21st in the West Region.
Freshman
Austin Corley ran a 52.71 in his second 400 meter hurdles race at WSU after also being injured during the indoor season and it ranks 44th in the NCAA and 25th in the West.
Dylan Reimer's javelin throw of 230-05 (70.23m) is the fourth-best in Shocker history and currently the 18th-best in the NCAA. IT ranks No. 8 in the West.
On the women's side, the second-best mark is All-American
Taylor Larch-Miller's 13.23 in the 100 meter hurdles which ranks No. 7 in the country and No. 3 in the West Region. Larch-Miller's mark is just .04 off her end-of-season mark in 2015 of 13.19.
After that, four Heptathletes are ranked with
Marteshia Caines is No. 9 overall, eighth in the West with 5,001 points, while
Claudia Rojo is No. 10 overall and ninth in the West with 4,965 points.
Sierra Hays is next at No. 11 overall, 10th in the West with 4,895 points, and
Carlea Holt is 22nd overall and 17th in the West with 4,656 points.
