Men Win Title, Women Second at MVC

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa  --  Wichita State's men's indoor track and field team won the Missouri Valley Conference Championship by a margin of nine points, 141.5 to 132.5 over SIU, Sunday afternoon while the women's team took runner-up honors to Illinois State.

The men's championship for WSU, which broke a string of seven MVC indoor and outdoor runner-up finishes, was the men's second overall title.  The first came in 2010.

Today's men's performance was highlighted by Jared Belardo, who swept the horizontal jumps with a second title, this time in the triple jump with a distance of 51-2.75. He won the long jump Saturday with a jump of 25-9.5. The Heptathlon multi-athletes also contributed 25 team points with Kyle Troxler (5,061) in second; Chris Peters (5,057) in third; Tyler Knight (5,005) in fourth; Ben Johnson in fifth (4,992) and Seth Buck in seventh (4,759).

Wichita State's women's team, which finished runner-up to Illinois State by 10 points, 121-111, was highlighted today by Breanne Borman's high jump title at a height of 5-8, and runner-up finishes by Rebekah Topham in the mile (4:55.19) and Taylor Larch-Miller in the 60 meter hurdles (8.31). Larch-Miller's time broke the school record previously held by her sister, Nikki (8.32).

WSU's 4x400 meter relay team of Gavyn Yetter, Taylor Thomas, Morgan Prather and Taylor Larch-Miller finished third in a time of 3:48.32. Larch-Miller also scored in the 200 meters with a fourth-place time of 24.59.

A dual-point scorer, Sidney Hirsch finished fourth in the 3,000 meters on Sunday (9:44.62), and fifth on Saturday in the 5,000 meters (16:56.48).

For the women on Saturday, Jamesia Milton won her eighth weight throw of the season with the title (66-10.75), and Borman was runner-up in the Pentathlon with 4,133 points.

Other men's runner-up finishes on Sunday included Ugis Jocis in the mile with a time of 4:14.05, and Shazz Michael Lindo in the triple jump with a season-best distance of 49-9. Runner-up finishes from Saturday included Skylar Arneson in the weight throw and Kaden Griffin in the long jump.

Jocis also ran the 800 meters and finished fifth with a time of 1:52.82.

Two distance runners were also placed for the men with Brady Johnson, who was third in the 5,000 meters on Saturday, and Kyle Larkin, who was fifth in the 5,000 meters on Saturday. 

In the shot put on Sunday, Zach Loesch finished third with a throw of 55-7.75.

The men also got a pair of fourth-place finishes by Garret Lynch in the high jump (6-9.75) and Hayden Bugner in the pole vault (16-5.25). 

Cody Scheck and Tucker Davis both also scored in two events with Scheck sixth in the 400 and Davis seventh, and Scheck fifth in the 200 and Davis eighth.

Two Shockers have marks that should qualify for the NCAA Championship. Belardo's long jump for the men was a WSU school record distance at 25-9.5, and is also the ninth-best in the NCAA. Borman's 4,155 points is currently the 16th-best in the NCAA.

The top 16 qualifiers who declare will compete in the NCAA Indoor Championship March 11-12 in Birmingham, Alabama.
