Shockers Sweep Johnson County, Crowder

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State softball team took down both Johnson County Community College and Crowder College on Saturday, defeating the Cavaliers, 11-3 and the Roughriders, 9-4.

Both Katie Malone and Bailey Klitzke threw a total of seven innings, with Malone allowing four runs on nine hits, while Klitzke allowed just three runs on four hits.

Asea Webber, Macklin Hitz and Paige Luellen all led the Shockers with three hits on the day, while Webber and Laurie Derrico led the team with four RBI.

The Shockers got off to a quick start against Johnson County, scoring on an error by the right fielder, followed by a double to left field by Webber to take an early 3-0 lead.

The Cavaliers scored one run in the top of the second, but the Shockers added three more in the bottom half of the inning after a bases loaded walk and a single by Luellen, the Shockers took a commanding 6-1 lead.

Wichita State tacked on four more in the bottom of the third to push the lead to 10-1, on a three run home run from Derrico to left field. The Cavaliers scored two in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to seven, 10-3.

The Shockers scored one more run in the bottom of the fifth on a double from Ashley Johnson to give the shockers the 11-3 win.

Game two was a different story. The Shockers scored first in the second inning, but gave up four runs in the top of the third to give the Roughriders a 4-1 lead. The Shockers
bounced back in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs of their own and batting through the entire lineup. Mauriana Jamele drove in the fourth and fifth runs of the inning on a single to right field.

Wichita State added three more runs in the fourth on a double from Hitz and a single from Webber. The Shockers didn't allow a run for the rest of the game, winning game two of the day, 9-4.

The Shockers are now 4-0 in the fall and look to continue their win streak on Wednesday, Oct. 5, as they take on Seminole State at 4 p.m.
