WICHITA, Kan. --Â The Wichita State women's tennis team jumped two spots in the latest Oracle/ITA Division I rankings, released Wednesday, and are now 37th nationally.
WSU (3-0, 1-0 MVC) defeated No. 35 Oklahoma on Sunday in Norman. The Shockers were ranked as high as No. 22 last March and ended the year at No. 36. With the majority of last year's cast back in place, WSU was tabbed 39th in the ITA's first set of rankings, released Jan. 5.
The next set of individual rankings is due out on Feb. 10.
WSU is one of 60 top teams invited to compete in the annual ITA Kickoff Weekend, which consists of 15, four-team brackets at host sites throughout the country. Winners of each pod will advance to compete in the 2016 ITA Division I National Indoor Team Championships.
The Shockers travel to College Station, Texas this Saturday to take on No. 60 Minnesota (3 p.m. CT) and will face either host, No. 10 Texas A&M or No. 73 South Alabama on Saturday.
The second-seeded Shockers open at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23 against third-seeded Minnesota at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. They'll face either top-seed and host Texas A&M or fourth-seeded South Alabama on the following day.
WSU split two matches at the 2015 Kickoff Weekend, hosted by the University of Southern California, falling 4-3 to No. 27 Pepperdine before defeating No. 69 Denver in the consolation round.
Texas A&M (17-6), the SEC regular season runner-up, closed out the year at No. 10 after a run to the NCAA Round of 16. Minnesota (17-10) checked in at No. 57, and South Alabama (14-7) – the Sun Belt Conference Tournament champs - finished up at No. 74.
