Grady Improving Following Spinal Concussion

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A neurosurgeon reviewed MRI results with Wichita State men's basketball player Anton Grady Saturday morning. They show no signs of spinal cord trauma.

Doctors believe Grady suffered a spinal cord concussion during his collision with an opposing player in the Shockers' Friday afternoon game at the AdvoCare Invitational, and they anticipate that, with time, his motor function and strength will return.

Grady was alert and responsive to questions and had feeling in his extremities on Friday but had limited use of his arms and legs. By Saturday morning the latter condition had improved, especially in his upper body.

Grady will receive physical therapy over the next couple of days, and doctors will monitor his progress before making a decision on his release from the hospital.

Following Saturday morning's practice, WSU players and coaches paid a visit to Grady in the hospital.

The collision occurred with just over three minutes remaining in the second half of Friday afternoon's game. Grady and others scrambled for a rebound underneath the Shocker basket. As Grady turned to run down the court on defense, his chin struck an opposing player, causing his head to rotate to one side.

Grady collapsed to the floor and lay facedown for several minutes, while being attended to by medical personnel. Once stabilized, he was loaded onto a stretcher and taken via ambulance to a nearby trauma center for evaluation.

CT and MRI scans taken Friday show no issues of concern.

The Shockers play their final game in Orlando at 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT on Sunday.
